Ronnie James Dio popularized the devil horns hand gesture synonymous with the rock and metal worlds. Known as the corna, the hand gesture comes from his Italian heritage — and was something his grandmother often did as a symbol of protection. Known mostly as the lead singer of metal band Rainbow, Dio also replaced Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath’s lead singer from 1979-1982. With no formal training in singing, Dio attributes his abilities to the breathing techniques he learned and practiced from playing the trumpet. Sadly in 2010, Dio passed away from stomach cancer. He was 66 years of age.
