The Smiths were a rock band formed in 1982 in Manchester, England by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, Morrissey was the lead vocalist, while Marr played the guitar. Mike Joyce joined them as the drummer and Andy Rourke ultimately replaced Dale Hibbert on bass.
Their first album was Meat Is Murder, but they didn’t garner mainstream success in Europe until the release of their second album in 1986, The Queen Is Dead.
The band only lasted 5 years, however, due to internal conflicts between the members, particularly between Morrissey and Marr. The two had severe creative differences towards the end.
During their 5 year existence, the band produced 4 albums.
