The Ronettes were an R&B, pop, and soul group formed by Veronica Bennett (“Ronnie Spector”), her sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley in 1957. The three girls began singing together when they were young at their grandmother’s house.
The group originally included other cousins of the three, Nedra, Diane, Elaine, and their male cousin Ira. When they performed at the Apollo Theatre in London one night, Ira couldn’t sing. When this happened, Veronica (Ronnie) sang in his place and brought the group praise.
After that night, only Veronica, Estelle, and Nedra remained in the group. The latter two took singing lessons and it wasn’t long before they auditioned for Colpix Records. They recorded several songs with the label, but ultimately left them in 1963 for Philles Records.
Their first hit single was “Be My Baby” at Gold Star Studios.
