Deep Purple is an English rock band that was formed in 1968 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England with their original band lineup being Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, and Nick Simper.
Their debut album was Shades of Deep Purple, which was released in July of 1968 in the United States by Tetragrammaton and in the United Kingdom a couple of months later in September by EMI. The most successful track on the album in the United States was their cover of “Hush” by Joe South. They were so successful initially that a second album was quickly produced, The Book fo Taliesyn, and released in October of the same year, as they were contracted to support the band Cream on their Goodbye tour and wanted their next album to be released alongside that. Unfortunately, that album didn’t sell as well as they hoped and it wasn’t released in the United Kingdom until the next year.
The band is somewhat famous for the number of complete lineup changes over the years, with the different band memberships from 1968 to 1976 being known as Mark I, II, III, and IV. They also took an 8 year hiatus from 1976 to 1984.
The band’s current membership includes Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Steve Morse, and Don Airey.
