Def Leppard is a rock band that was formed in Sheffield, England in 1977 by Rick Savage, Tony Kenning, and Pete Willis with the original name of Atomic Mass. Joe Elliott joined as the lead singer in 1977 and suggested the change to the name “Deaf Leopard”. Tony Kenning thought the spelling of the name should be changed to avoid resembling a punk band. Steve Clark joined the band in 1978. Kenning left the band in November of 1978 and was replaced by Frank Noon for The Def Leppard E.P.
The first album the band released on March 14, 1980, On Through the Night, made the Top 15 in the United Kingdom. Fans weren’t happy with the band in the beginning due to appearance of selling out to Americans through some of the songs they recorded and touring more in the United States. The displeasure was so strong at this that the band had beer cans and bottles filled with urine thrown at them at their performance at the Reading Festival in August of 1980.
The second studio album, High ‘n’ Dry, was released in July of 1981 and was Pete Willis’ last album with the band full time, as he was fired in 1982 due to drinking excessively while working with the band.
