The Velvet Underground was formed in 1964 by Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Angus MacLise in New York City. They were a popular rock band between 1964 and 1973 and even though they never achieved much commercial success, they are known today as having been influential in the development of the punk rock music that came later.
Their first album was The Velvet Underground & Nico released by Verve Records in 1967. Nico (Christa Päffgen) was a German singer that record producer Andy Warhol insisted be featured on the album.
