Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl began his music career with the band Scream in Washington DC at the age of only 17 years old in 1986. To increase his odds of getting the position as drummer, he lied about his age and upon their acceptance of him into the group, he dropped out of high school as a junior.

He first met Kurt Cobain when Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins took him to see Scream in 1990. When Scream disbanded a few months later, Osbourne gave him Cobain’s phone number. He was invited to audition for Nirvana and ended up joining the band. Grohl would spend the next 5 years with Nirvana until Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April of 1994. After Nirvana disbanded, Grohl received multiple different offers for a position as drummer, including one from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and even a rumor that he may join Pearl Jam due to performing with them for two or three shows during their Australian tour in spring of 1995.

But, he eventually decided to do some recordings of his own where he played all of the instruments and sang all of the tracks. He released an album’s worth of material under “Foo Fighters”. He recruited Nate Mendel, William Goldsmith, and Pat Smear to join him in the band. It debuted on February 23, 1995.
