Cream was a British rock band founded by Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and Ginger Baker in London in 1966. The name most well known today is Eric Clapton, who sang and contributed some songs in addition to filling his role as guitarist for the band.

Clapton met Bruce and Baker in 1966 and all three musicians were impressed with each other’s playing ability. As they were riding down the road, Baker asked Clapton to join his band and Clapton agreed to it only if Bruce was hired as the bassist. There was a lot of quarreling between Bruce and Baker in the beginning that ended up in Bruce being fired from the group. Because Bruce kept showing up for gigs, anyway, at one point Baker threatened him at knife point.

Eventually the two resolved their issues and ended up naming the band “Cream”, as all three members were considered to be the “cream of the crop” of their genre in Britain at the time. Their first album was debuted in 1996 titled Fresh Cream and made it to #6 on the UK charts. It wasn’t such a big hit in the US, coming in at #39.
