Foreigner is a British-American rock band that was formed in 1976 by Mick Jones and Ian McDonald with American singer Lou Gramm. The name came from the fact that Jones, McDonald, and Dennis Elliot were British, while Lou Gramm, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi were from the United States. The name on their first demo tape was “Trigger”, but the band name was discovered to have been taken, so Jones came up with the name of Foreigner, because regardless of what country they ever performed in, at least one member of the band would be exactly that: a foreigner.
The biggest hit single of all time for the band was “I Want To Know What Love Is”, which was released in 1984 on their fifth album, Agent Provocateur. It hit #1 on the charts in both the US and the UK, remains a staple of classic rock to this day, and has been used in many different film soundtracks over the years.
