“Next To You” appeared on The Police debut album Outlandos d’Amour, released in 1978. Combining a punk outlook with a slide guitar solo, it was the lead off track on the album. The album, produced by the band themselves, was recorded on a very small budget at Surrey Sound in the U.K. The album brought much success though with hit “Roxanne” fueling major sales and breaking the act in the U.S. and worldwide.
