Stevland Hardaway was born on May 13, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, and he became known as Stevie Wonder, musician, singer and songwriter. Born prematurely, he suffered from detached retinas which caused him to be blind since birth. His mother, Lula Mae Hardaway was a musician and songwriter as well. His father is Calvin Judkins. Wonder began singing as a child in the Whitestone Baptist Church choir. He was a prodigy; at a young age he mastered the piano and several other instruments.
His first success was when he composed “Lonely Boy” in 1961 at the age of 11. Ronnie White of the Miracles mentored Stevie and had him audition with Motown Records. Stevie was signed with Motown Records, and it was here where he earned his nickname “Little Stevie Wonder” due to his incredible talent.
He has won numerous music awards. He is most famous was for the song “The Woman in Red”. Wonder is also a humanitarian and earned the United Nations’ Messenger of Peace.
